A Local Food Celebration 2010 By Slow Food PEC Published: April 18, 2010 PrintEmail
On Sunday April 11th, Slow Food The County and Books & Company co-hosted an afternoon of local tasting, a food book launch and an opportunity for people to engage first hand with some of our local producers.
More than 60 guests had the opportunity to hear and meet Sarah Elton, who just launched her new book, Locavore: From Farmers’ Fields to Rooftop Gardens, How Canadians are changing the way we eat. Those in attendance were quite pleased to hear Sarah refer to Prince Edward County as the locavore capital of the province of Ontario! Sarah Elton is the food columnist for CBC Radio’s Here and Now and writes regularly for publications across North America. Locavore is her first book. To learn more about the book and the author, visit her web site at www.thelocavore.ca
This was followed by a wonderful potluck lunch, created mainly with local good, clean, and fair ingredients. These dishes were accompanied by a selection of wine tastings, compliments of The Grange Estate Winery.
Finally, attendees had an opportunity to talk to a number of local and regional producers about their products, and in some cases to buy some fresh vegetables (yes.even at this time of year!!), such as potatoes, cherry tomatoes, leeks, lettuce greens, spinach, Jerusalem artichokes, and more. They also had an opportunity to sample cheese from a number of sources from the County and the surrounding region as well as some locally smoked fish.
Slow Food the County would like to thank all who participated in this wonderful event; these include Alexandra Bake, of Books & Company, whose collaboration on this joint event was priceless; The Grange Estate Winery, for hosting the wine tasting; All of the producers listed below, as well as all those whose cooking and baking skills could be appreciated by all!
